Protecting elderly victims of abuse and neglect

On Behalf of | May 18, 2021 | Nursing Home Neglect and Abuse

When you select a nursing home for a loved one, you trust it will be a safe and caring environment. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case.

Sometimes, elderly individuals in this situation are unable or afraid to speak up for themselves. It is important to know the warning signs to watch for and report them immediately. Unless it is an isolated incident, you may want to take legal action.

Nursing home abuse

The state of New York has published documents describing nursing home residents’ rights. These include the right to a safe, comfortable living environment where they can live with respect and dignity. If your loved one is in a nursing home, watch for these and other signs of abuse:

  • Unexplained injuries
  • Visible bruises or scars
  • Broken glasses
  • Signs of wrist restraints

These are just some of the warning signs of physical abuse. Emotional abuse is more difficult to identify without witnessing the behavior of the caregiver. In any case, nursing home abuse is illegal, and you do have recourse.

Nursing home neglect

Neglect is a conscious decision to refrain from taking care of someone for whom you are responsible. The warning signs of nursing home neglect may include the items above, but also watch for:

  • Unsatisfactory personal hygiene
  • Soiled linens
  • Malnutrition
  • Bedsores

Most individuals who choose to work as caregivers are a blessing to you and your loved ones. However, some are unhappy with their jobs and may take it out on the people in their care. Protect your loved ones by watching for signs of abuse and neglect and reporting them to the appropriate authority.
