Rutberg Breslow’s donation helps the local K-9 program

Dogs are widely cherished as domestic companions, but some also collaborate with law enforcement agents to solve crimes. In the U.S., certain dog breeds are trained to perform specific duties alongside the police. Dogs have a powerful sense of smell and other abilities that humans lack. They can expedite searches and carry out tasks that benefit victims and save time.

K-9 programs can be costly, with expenses accumulating from the purchase of the dogs to training expenses, maintenance, and care. Not all counties have the budget to establish and sustain a canine program, making donations crucial for its viability.

The K-9 program is back in Sullivan County

Years ago, Sullivan County’s officers could rely on trained canines to help with their duties. However, the county paused the local K-9 program after the two dogs, who were respected police members, experienced misfortunes. In April 2024, Martin Rutberg and Lawrence Breslow, attorneys from Rutberg Breslow Law Firm, donated $5,000 to help reinstate the K-9 program in Sullivan County.

The sheriff’s office utilized the money to acquire a dog and equipment. On April 18, both lawyers received recognition during a county legislature meeting. Undersheriff Eric Chaboty expressed his gratitude for the contribution and stated that budget constraints are a persistent issue for special units.

Many police departments in the country use dogs as team members. However, law enforcement agents typically use certain breeds, and dogs must pass rigorous training before beginning their duties. K-9 programs are often divided into two categories: patrol and detection. Dogs can be trained for one of these purposes or perform dual roles, covering both categories.

In Sullivan County, the K-9 program will cover multiple functions, such as detecting illegal drugs, human remains, and explosives. The canines will assist government agents through their unique abilities. The reinstated K-9 program is expected to be a helpful addition to the sheriff’s office, providing significant benefits to the county.
